The Term has started with the best surprise announcement...In the Term Break, Antonia met with Murihiun Polyfest Art Awards Judges to share our Takitimu Waka Project. Arriving back this week, we received a letter from the Organisers, letting us know that our Project has been selected as a Finalist in this year's Polyfest Art Awards!! Wahoo!!! Such a fabulous conclusion to a huge community effort - we are so proud of our Winton Kindy Community and all the support we continue to receive to make ideas such as this become reality!
Capital E Children's Theatre Production "Odd One Out"
On Tuesday we headed by bus to the majestic Invercargill Civic Theatre to watch the Odd One Out Children's Theatre Show produced by Capital E. Inclusive play is something that is always discussed, debated, and tested out at Kindy - making "Odd One Out" the perfect storyline to begin our Term, especially as we have lots of new faces join the groups. You will often overhear the children say: "You can say you can play, but you can't say play" and "You can say you are my friend but you can't say you're not my friend" these simple mantras remind us to be kind, caring, and inclusive of others and help us to remember what pro-social behaviour looks and feels like.
Zip! The blue thingee gets put in the blue spot.
Ping! The green-majig goes to the green spot.
Bash! The yellow-whozit is placed in the yellow spot.
Three curious characters live a busy life in a world where everything has a purpose and place… until one day, an Odd character arrives and things start to change. Suddenly their world is full of things that don’t belong anywhere! What will the Odd One Out do next and will anything ever be the same again?
Odd One Out is a great theatre introduction for young children. Created for ages 2-8, it approaches a subject we all experience at one time or another – feeling left out or different. Through the vibrant and bubbly characters, the audience experiences a new world and discovers with the characters that being different isn’t bad. In fact, it can be exciting! With physical action and comedy, the three characters, at first cautious of the Odd One, learn that embracing new ways of doing things can be exciting and lead to unexpected creations.
This non-verbal live performance is delightfully entertaining and playful. The intriguing nature of the characters and the mischievous Odd One are a joy to watch and the unfolding story will have your tamariki laughing and engaging with the characters and their antics.

How impressionable this performance was ... so much so we got the children to share their interpretations! Their monochrome sketches were both exploratory & interpretative. The drawing & writing process involves documenting layers of thoughts & ideas & using each layer as a stepping-stone to another layer. Aliens, monsters, tunnels that talked ... were some of the children's interpretations. We hope you were able to access the 'Odd One Out' hyperlink we sent home this week through a Facebook post. We'd love you to share more dialogue with us in the comments below!
Haere Mai to all our new families in our Thur/Fri group this week & a welcome back to our Limehills Volunteer Army - Catilin McWhirter, Annalise Hammond & Cameron Scully who shared part of the morning with us today. Transparent slides on the lightbox have been a real hit! Lots of design logic through the introduction of various shapes both 2-dimensional & 3-D dimensional.
Keep warm in the weekend ... we hear it might just snow!!!
