Ecological Discoveries Continue!
Our fossil investigations has evolved into investigating; gemstones, old branches, shells, and even making our own fossil discoveries in the sandpit! Ashton Kemp and Taylor Cashell made a discovery in the sandpit, leading them to take appropriate steps to clean and preserve their discovery. The excitement for eco discoveries throughout the week has drawn many of nga tamariki to go digging for discoveries too! Our very own kindy palaeontologists! I'm sure we will have a lot more excavation work continuing next week!
Ng tamariki put their skills to work and created their own fossils with Linda. Once the plaster was poured into the mould impression of the rocks, shells and stick formations we had to wait sometime for it to dry. Once it had dried, WOW, you could see all the tiny lines, bumps and impressions!
Taiao Tuhura Forest Kindy
Still no sign of the mysterious eel! But! Something mysterious did brake the Dragon's Nest! Was it the Wolf...or was it the storm? Nevertheless, the Forest Kindy Whanau were on the job to fix the nest back into place, complete with "jewels" in the middle.
While investigating Ivy Russell, something fabulous happened! A gift from nature itself! Kowhai seeds which were discovered in the now named "Kowhai Corner." Rimon shared "the pods fall from the tree with seeds inside!" Keep reading to see what happened next...
Nature's Gift to Everyone - Kowhai Seeds!
What a fantastic process from discovering kowhai seeds at Forest Kindy, collecting them, and bringing them back to kindy to be planted. Rimon Douglas and his mum, Jane, kindly donated sunflower seeds into kindy to be planted too. We have so many gardener expects at kindy who will nurture their growth. Check out our photos below, grow seedlings, grow!
Eco Investigation - Is it Real Grass?
Grass in a tub!? This seemed a bit odd to some of nga tamariki. Our friends involved in the process of planting the grass seedlings reassured that this was indeed "real grass." Jack Howard suggested that we should do a 'feel test.' He suggested, "we should put one hand on the grass (in the tub) and one had on the grass (kindy lawn) to see if it feels the same." Yes, it felt like real grass, but it was noted that the grass appeared a different shade of green and much longer than the kindy lawn. Measurements were taken to be sure! It was great to see nga tamariki investigating their natural world and utilising nature in their imaginative play. After tickling their toes in the lush grass the animals and dinosaurs came to play in the grass too!
Nature's Gift to Us Continues - Blueberry Smoothies & Crab Apple Juice!
After our visit to the Blueberry Farm there was much discussion about what nga tamariki like to eat blueberries with, such as; blueberries with their yoghurt and blueberry muffins. The verdict was out - blueberry smoothies for everyone! We had our smoothie experts preparing bananas and adding the milk and blueberries to complete the ingredients for a very sweet tasting smoothie! YUM! It was worth withstanding the loud blender sound to share a tasty drink with friends. We must've had a thirsty Wednesday because there were many requests to make more Crab Apple Juice from nga tamariki, lucky we have lots of apples growing on our tree! What a treat for the tastebuds!
Next week we hope to continue our exploration of rocks, fossils, and crystals! I wonder if anyone has crystals/gemstones they would like to share with us at kindy?
Have a great weekend!
