We've been using our best singing voices when practicing our chosen Polyfest songs for this year's 2018 performance. Keeping with tradition we are singing/performing, Tong Tong (Fillipino) & Tutira Mai (Te Reo Maori) again this year. We love how many tamariki, who have had older siblings participating in last year's Polyfest performance, are already familiar with these songs and feel confident joining in with the actions & singing along! AWESOME!! Recognising our exploration into the Takitimu Legend we thought nga tamariki would enjoy Hoea Tea Waka. We can paddle along in our very own 'Takitimu Waka' as we sing! Below are 3 Youtube links to our songs. You can share these songs at home for the whole whanau to learn! Tong Tong Tutor Mai Hoea Te Waka
Our Polyfest Journey
Plans for creating our 'Upturned Takitimu Waka' are still underway. Christina is researching grant funding opportunities to aid our vision. Next week (hopefully!) Christina and Antonia will be catching up with Oti at Te Taonga Mauri - The Living Treasure to help with his carving art creation of Matariki. How exciting!! Stayed tuned next week when we, including some of our Forest Kindy tamariki & whanau, join Winton Community Board Meeting next Tuesday to share our vision! Wish us luck!
Matariki
At Forest Kindy on Tuesday the group collected kowhai seeds and kowhai pods to bring back to Kindy. Matariki celebrates the Maori New Year and new life. With our own Matariki Family Night Celebration coming up at Kindy, we have been sharing our ideas around how to include an ecological lens - Rachel our Forest Kindy teacher suggested for families to each plant seed on the night to take home and nurture - fabulous!
How Do We Celebrate Matariki?
Charlie McPherson shared, "Coming together." Zara Mitchell stated, "The 7 Stars!" Great! To further explore Matariki and gain some ideas of how we could celebrate we watched a Matariki Youtube story. Sharing an evening at kindy was agreed upon as a brilliant idea, and of course no celebration is complete without yummy kai! Sophia, Jack Howard & Ashton shared a great idea of bringing torches along too!
We also discovered that each star has its own name & representation such as 'Tupu-ā-Rangi'. When this star is signing brightly in the sky it means that our plants will grow well! You can share this Matariki clip at home by clicking on the link: Matariki
Tupu-ā-Rangi
Linda has been busy gardening with nga tamariki planting celery, spinach & silver beat in preparation for Matariki. Sun, water & 'healthy' soil were uncovered through discussion as important elements in helping our plants grow. We wondered if our plants would grow well throughout winter if we saw Tupu-ā-Rangi shinning brightly during Matariki...let us know if can see it! Matariki Parent Group Meeting
Big thanks to our AMAZING parents for coming along to organise our Matariki Celebration Evening. - Natalie Langford, Becks Koro, Katie Pasini, Alice Herratt, Nyssah Cooper, Donna Thurston & Sue Bower. Kaiako shared nga tamariki kai ideas (not forgetting bringing along touches) with our Parent Group. With everyone's input we have a FANTASTIC celebration planned for our whanau. Watch out for your Facebook invite with more details.
