We arrived on Monday morning to find a Monarch Butterfly on our Swan Plant!! Mila announced to everyone that she could see the second butterfly after lunch! This was EXTREMELY exciting!!! Everyone gathered round to observe how the Monarch Butterfly stretched and slowly flapped her wings. "Why couldn't the butterfly fly yet!?" We learnt she was drying her wings so that she would then be able to fly. "How could we tell if the butterfly was a female or male?" We challenged nga tamariki to do some researching at home with their whanau to find out. We had some lengthy conversations surrounding how to identify the difference as we worked out that we had 3 female butterflies! On Friday Tamiah and Katrina donated an additional female butterfly to the whanau, 4 Monarch Butterflies!!! We can't wait to see what nga tamariki make of this on Monday.
"It's Not a Box!"
We had an anonymous delivery on Monday morning, a box...but it wasn't a box! It was a house, a ship, a magic carpet and much more!! We love how a simple eco friendly donation, (a recycled refrigerated box) made for great imaginative adventures for nga tamariki! The adventures didn't stop when we read Not a Box story, check it out online via Youtube: Not a Box
Happy Valentine's Day
We celebrated Valentine's Day with love and scrumptious food to share with everyone. Picked zucchini from our garden made for a great experience for nga tamariki to make zucchini quiche for lunch, thanks to Anna Howard for assisting! To top off this DELICIOUS lunch, Jack Howard shared his baked Valentine's Day 'heart shaped' chocolate cake - 'What do you love about Valentine's Day Jack - CAKE'!
Story Time!
Each fortnight we're delighted to have Raewyn from Winton Library join us on a Thursday afternoon to read nga tamariki special stories. Luke joined us this week, covering for Raewyn ... the tamariki were captivated as he shared some 'well chosen' stories. See you in two weeks time!
Forest Kindy
This week we welcomed Electra, Tamiah, Leighton, and Charles to Taiao Tuhura - Forest Kindy to some weekly ecological adventures at Ivy Russell Reserve. Nga tamariki had a fantastic time investigating different bugs, bark, and plants ... and not forgetting that HUNGRY WOLF!!! That sneaky Wolf took a bite out of Millie and April's sandwich crusts! Hopefully your lunches are safe next time!
Winton Autumn Flower Show
Wow, what amazing flowers, baking and crafts we saw at the Autumn Flower Show! We were especially proud to see our art projects on display. Taking first place (in the U10 section) at the Show "The Magic of Metamorphosis: Who am I?" showcasing beautiful butterflies, caterpillars, and a chrysalis with a butterfly inside! And, our living 'grassy' art piece "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" made for a wonderful final touch to our Ecological inspired artwork. A MASSIVE tumeke to our artistic tamariki!! A big hit during the Show was seeing the honeybees from Southland Honey Bee Keepers. "What are the bees doing!!?" We're eager to investigate further when we have our very own honeybee visit on Wednesday 28th Feb. A special thank you to our parent helpers for joining us!
We're so proud of Tamiah!! First Prize for her Sand saucer!! |
