We sat in suspense (last Friday night) anticipating an award....well we hoped our mahi would be recognised. We waited and waited until right to the end of the Awards Ceremony. Yes!! We won the Kaitiaki!! Awarded for our mahi & recognised as Guardians of our land - more especially Ivy Russell Reserve - where our Takitimu Waka rests. Our ongoing duty to share our kete of knowledge surrounding the Legend of the Takitimu Mountains. Be sure to visit Stadium Southland (2nd floor - Legends Lounge) - Murihiku Polyfest Art Exhibition & check out all the incredible art entries, open until 7 September.
Sharing the BIG NEWS
Nga tamariki shared our OUTSTANDING news with the rest of our kindy whanau. Proud as! We'll carry on this pride as we head into our on stage Kapahaka performance.
What is Polyfest?
We've been practising our Polyfest Kapahaka Waiata, but what else will be happening on the BIG day? The exciting trip on the bus to Stadium Southland, getting changed into our kakahu (costumes) to perform on stage in front of an audience. For a visual insight we watched previous Kapahaka performances at Polyfest. "There's Cooper!" Poppy shared with kindy whanau. We love nga tamariki sharing their siblings Polyfest experiences with us, what a tradition it has become!
Kapa haka practise continues - be sure to download a copy of our Polyfest waiata shared on our FB page.
Kaitiaki - Guardians of Ivy Russell Reserve
On Tuesday Taylor & Andi joined the Forest Kindy whanau. As 'Eco Warriors' & 'Kaitiaki Guardians' we collected litter scattered through Ivy Russell Reserve! We agree with Hollie who shared "Rubbish needs to go in the rubbish bin or the animals could choke & die". Nga tamariki noticed something in the tree...was it more rubbish!? No, it was a pencil - a pencil tree! This had our group puzzled. Ally theorised her wonder by sharing with the group "the tree might've been growing pencils all morning!?" This wonder led us to share our ideas with others back @ Kindy..
Do Trees Grow Pencils!?
Diving into a sea of wonder with nga tamariki, kaiako love creating thought provoking questions to support children's theorising - trees ARE wooden so could it be possible for trees to really grow pencils!? Let's investigate further next week!
BNZ "Closed for Good" Day
On Wednesday we had special guests from our local Winton BNZ Bank; Karen, Janelle & Jack Johntsone's Mum - Charlotte. Our 'storytellers' read through Penny the Penguin via an interactive story online, which held a special message of identifying the difference between 'want' & 'need' as an early awareness of being "money smart". We value members from our local community taking time out of their busy day to connect with our tamariki!
Noticing the Extraordinary in the Ordinary
"Look!! I found something, come look!!! A Daffodil!!' Taylor announced. Taylor shared her discovery with friends & kaiako, noticing the only daffodil to have spread open it's petals, WOW! What a wonderful provocation ...
The Language of Drawing - representing our understandings through monchrome & coloured sketches! How do daffodils know what colour to become?
Spring is indeed JUST around the corner!
Have a wonderful weekend!
